Why should I be merciful when I am justified or in a position of administering a punishment or consequence that is warranted?
We’ve all been harmed, injured or hurt by someone else. I don’t think any one will make it through life without some scrapes, bumps or wounds.
It is so much easier to recognize, lament and focus on the wounds inflicted upon us by others, but how often do we, with the same level of intensity, consider the almost countless instances where we have been the one doing the harming.
Harming doesn’t require throwing a punch. A thoughtless or miss timed comment or joke, a deliberate withholding of kindness and affection, or acting with selfishness can all cause injury, harm and wounds to another.
When I consider the mountain of moments that I have been either foolish or fiendish, I realize the great need I have for mercy from others and more especially from the God who created me.
I am not perfectly merciful, but as I have spent more time observing my great need for mercy, I have become so much quicker and ready to extend mercy and the benefit of the doubt to others.
I remember that blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.
