I am a firm proponent for the idea that all action first germinates in the realm of thought before it blossoms into act.
Spontaneous though it may seem outwardly to others, our actions are the result of thought. We are not mere puppets but free agents, sentient beings who think for themselves.
Thus circumstance is the result of action, and action is the product of thought. And though not easy, thoughts can and must be controlled and altered if we are to avoid catastrophe.
Obesity is one of those individual and collective catastrophes that is ruining lives and ending them prematurely.
We all like to blame external factors or genetics to explain or justify our condition. But what if that cause and cure to this modern pandemic originated in the mind. I increasingly believe it does.
Let me share a surface example of my own to illustrate but in doing do I also acknowledge that thought and it’s effects on outcome is far more complex than what I am about to describe.
For years I’ve enjoyed drinking soda, both internally and externally I have declared my love for soda, particularly root beer.
Because I thought it, and verbalized it, these would crystallize into action, which became habit. Whenever there was an option for soda, I would take it. I had thought and told myself I loved soda for so long that it became true.
Now it’s no revelation that soda is bad for us, even the zero calorie nonsense they tout these days.
So early in January this year, I decided to start thinking and telling myself that I don’t like soda anymore. I vocally say to people that I don’t drink it.
We’re still early days for sure, but I’m beginning to see how thought and verbalizing thought affects my actions.
It’s been over two months now, which for a heavy soda drinker like me is quite a big deal. Although not painless or easy, I believe that if we want to change our waistlines, we must first go back to the birthplace of action; our thoughts, and remove and replace all unhealthy thoughts. Only then can we succeed in changing our circumstances.

Time for me to do this with chocolate. Especially chocolate with caramel. I hate it. I really really hate it. Now on to cementing that in my psyche.
