Sometimes we need to make sure we are wearing the correct lenses before we start taking action. Without the correct lens, it can be difficult, if not impossible to see clearly. Some tasks in life are inconvenienced without correct lenses, but sometimes distorted or impaired vision can be dangerous, even fatal.
I wear prescription lenses that correct my long distance vision, which I am legally required to wear while driving. I could drive without them, but everything becomes a little blurry in the distance. Wearing my glasses helps me to see the world more clearly and crisply.
Cassandra also wears prescription glasses but hers do not help me to see clearly, nor do mine work for her. I must have the correct lenses for my eyes if I want to see clearly.
Doctors will often wear lenses that magnify their eyesight at least 2.5 times. They do this so that they can see clearly and accurately whilst performing life changing surgery. These lenses might serve a doctor well in the operating room but would be awful and dangerous for driving home after work.
I need glasses to see the distant views, but not to read a book. Reading glasses wouldn’t help me to drive my car. In photography their are different lenses for capturing close up or distance pictures. In medicine they use powerful lenses to see microscopic organisms and similarly powerful lenses are used in astronomy to gaze up at and explore the heavens. Each lens is designed for a specific purpose that would be useless in other endeavors. No one needs a telescope to read this article.
Lenses help us to see the world clearly.
When we are facing problems or making major decisions in our lives, it is important to consider whether or not we are seeing the situation clearly. All of us have many different lenses through which we try to see the world, our biases, our experiences, our history, our education, our culture, our religion, our beliefs, our opinions, our expectations are just some examples of the lenses we use.
If we are not using the correct lens to see, it can make life harder, dangerous and even fatal. How many fights in marriage could be resolved if we could just see the situation or our spouse more clearly?
How many misunderstandings in families would be ironed out if we saw things more accurately? How much personal suffering could be solved if we saw ourselves as we truly are instead of through some distorted lens that was given to us by others?
Every marriage, family and life has problems. But instead of rushing to solve them, perhaps we ought to step back, check our vision, and make the necessary adjustments so that we can see clearly. We would expect our surgeon to have on the correct lenses before performing surgery, should we expect anything less before we try to work on our families, relationships and even ourselves?
