We spent all day today re-configuring many of the rooms in our home. At some point I sat down on the couch and said out loud to Cassandra, “If I am guilty of one thing, it’s that I am not grateful enough.”
After a long pause, she replied, “You’re guilty of more than that one thing.”
Of course she is right, but today as I cleaned and moved our home around, I was reminded of how fortunate and blessed I and my family have been.
The scriptures repeatedly tell us to remember. Most of us already know what we need to know, what we need is to be reminded and to remember. Lately I have allowed myself to forget what good things the Lord has done for me.
I heard a song today that sang about God being able to take anything and make something good out of it. I don’t know how God does it. But I have seen beauty come from the ashes, even the ashes I have caused by torching my own life.
From the ashes of my mission came a marriage to a remarkable and beautiful woman and the birth of five incredible children who have taught me how to love. From the ashes of a failed career came the opportunity to be debt free and to travel in Europe for five months.
Sometimes I am too quick to forget, which causes ingratitude and dismal views of the future. I have great reason to repent in this regard. God has been so good to me. My family and I have been so abundantly blessed, and sometimes all I can do is complain and worry. I am guilty of this and I need to spend more time remembering and appreciating all the good that God has already done for me, because when I really take the time to count my blessings and name them one by one, I really am surprised at what the Lord has done.
