I’m not a pharmacist

If my wife has one critique of my writing it’s that I don’t often provide many application suggestions for the principles and ideas I write about.
One reason is that I don’t see myself as a pharmacist who hands out prescriptions for people’s ailments. I don’t believe one size fits all and sharing prescriptions can prove unhelpful, even dangerous.
I understand why we like prescriptive approaches because it means we don’t have to think, we just have to follow. When only a principle is shared, we’re required to think for ourselves and decide how to apply it.
I feel like Jesus’ parables are often examples of principles and not prescriptions. Even his commandments are the same. Love thy neighbor as thyself is a principle, the exact application and how that looks in each persons life is down to their own thinking and applying.
I’m not entirely opposed to prescriptive approaches, sometimes it’s useful and necessary to be that way. But generally I try, though not perfect, to avoid offering prescriptive advice or solutions for someone else’s life or most vexing problems.
For example, I’m happy to say that eating a whole food plant based diet is the ideal diet for sustaining and maintaining a healthy body, but I wouldn’t tell anyone the exact meals and foods they should eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We live in an era of gurus with their systems, steps and all you have to do’s and most of it is utter nonsense. I don’t want to be one of those people. So I will continue my short thoughts (and a little advice) on life, relationships, Christianity and more.
