My goal is to raise children who are successful, confident, mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong and resilient and above all Christlike.
This is one of the reasons why I have no plans to ever give my children a smart phone.
My plan is to raise five un-smart children.
Smart phones, for all their benefits are a minefield to young, especially adolescent children. They are dangerous.
Some argue that with modern parental controls and restrictions a cell phone can be handled safely. I should be teaching my children responsibility, not restricting them… right?
But it is easier to keep an intruder out by never opening the door. Even the slightest crack makes opening the door so much easier. And often, once a door has been opened, it never gets closed.
Once a smart phone is given, it’s usually only a matter of time before games, social media, and internet browsing follow. All bearing their own unique hazards and dangers.
And I can’t, in good conscience, seem to justify exposing my children to threats that could derail a good life.
Raising un-smart children isn’t a guarantee they will grow up to be successful, confident, mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong and resilient and Christlike. But I see absolutely no support that smart phones will lead to those outcomes either.
The time will come when they will be old enough and be earning enough to make their own decisions, but until then, I’m going to keep raising five un-smart children.
