On October 10th, 2021 a torrential downpour revealed to us a leak in our homes roof.
So the following morning before church I decided to climb up and inspect the potential problem. I had a can of spray for patching leaks on shingle roofs, but upon observation I saw that I needed much more than a can of spray, we needed a new roof!
The existing shingles on the dormer sections of our home were missing, cracked and damaged. With only an hour before heading to church, I immediately started to tear all the old shingles off.
But as with many other projects during our home renovation, I underestimated how difficult and time consuming this would be.
At one point I sat alone looking east toward the mountains and thought; “I can’t do this”.
The day was wearing on, my energy was wearing out, and the forecast wasn’t looking special.
So I called some friends who, even on the sabbath, came to my aid when I really needed them.
We worked until sunset on Sunday and started before sunrise on Monday. After several trips to the hardware store, heavy lifting, a split and bleeding finger and plenty of tar mess, we clambered down just as the rain started descending again.
No more leaks! Even after several more downpours.
In one of his state of the union addresses, John F. Kennedy said;
The best time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.
Generally it is the storms of life, not the calm moments, that reveal the leaks in our lives.
Sometimes a storm prompts us to inspect our lives only to discover it is much worse than we had expected.
But it is when the sun is shining that it is wise to employ our best efforts, and the help of others, to repair and renew what needs fixing so that when the inevitable storms of life roll in we are much more prepared to weather and withstand them.
