When I was 19 and living away from home for the first time, I met an older gentleman who always asked people how they were doing.
Whether the response to his simple question was positive or negative his reply was always the same, “serves you right.”
It was his opinion that happy or sad, good or bad, it was our own making and we deserved what we were feeling.
To some this might seem cold, harsh or even a little unchristian. But I don’t know if he was wrong. Most often we do seem to reap what we sow.
Of course some things are out of our control. But how we respond to any given situation and how we choose to feel will always remain in our control.
A poor diagnoses for example doesn’t necessarily have to lead us to feel despair and depressed.
What do you think? Does what we are feeling “serve us right”?
