Many Americans would walk into our home and say it was small. Compared to lots of homes in the United States our home is definitely on the smaller end of the spectrum. It’s a modest home, no doubt about that.
But having spent the past six months in and around British houses, coming home has given me a fresh and renewed perspective. Compared to the average semi-detached house that many Britons live in, our home would be considered noticeably more spacious.
And our yard! Wow. Not many Brits can boast a yard our size.
I have observed in American culture an almost insatiable appetite for bigger homes, and an almost constant dissatisfaction with the current dwelling size.
But size is always relative. Often we only think our home is small because we are comparing it to someone else’s instead of appreciating just how good we already have it.
I really like our home. It was formerly a rental and cosmetically speaking it needs a little facelift, which we plan to administer over the coming years. But I am determined to see the good and the potential. God has been so good to our family and I’m not about to start complaining about the blessings I’ve received.
Does this include the blessing of your American wife? Her disproportionate body and most Americans want better and the grass is greener on the other side?
