I’ve not come to terms with death. It’s not like I have a diagnosis or any reason to suspect I’m dying soon, but death is one of the major wrestles of my soul.
As I led in bed a few nights ago, I asked Cassandra whether she’d want death to sneak up and snatch her away or give her six months notice.
It sounds almost morose to to speak of, but death is coming for all of us. It’s the inescapable destination of all who were ever born.
How would you want to go? Suddenly or slowly? I suppose death is coming slowly for each of us. But the thought is often so terrifying that we push it away and drown it out, because who loves thinking about death.
I’ve never forgotten the night many years ago when Cassandra said during a conversation on death that she wasn’t afraid to die because she wasn’t afraid to live.
I’ve thought about this many times. I do believe I have been guilty of fearing to live. I’ve talked about not wanting to blow up a balloon for fear of it being popped, sometimes I have lived my life that way.
Cassandra conversely, almost always blows up the balloon and guess what? Many do get burst either quickly or eventually but she enjoys and loves the time she does get with her balloon. And when one bursts, she inflates another.
Her approach to life has helped me to live more abundantly. Don’t misunderstand, I still struggle. But if you’ve ever seen pictures of us in England, Europe or across the United States, it’s largely because of her. I’d have stayed home and hoarded the money because of fearing what might happen tomorrow.
But anyway. Death is coming. So we might as well start loving today. Inflate those balloons you never have. Yes they will burst at some point, but it’s better to enjoy them for a short while than to never have enjoyed them at all.
