That hurt.

Saturday afternoon Cassandra asked me if I would go and start a fire at the end of the yard.
Being a willing husband I stopped what I was doing and went out into the yard to help. As I was gathering some kindling to start the fire, I walked across a concrete slab that had a thin layer or wet mud on the surface.
No sooner had my feet stepped onto the mud than they slipped from under me and I came down hard.
I don’t remember the last time pain reduced me to tears, but I felt both tears welling up in my eyes and swear words upon my tongue.
I think the presence of my nephew prevented an explosion of expletives. But it hurt so bad.
I hobbled back to the house and into the bathroom, mud plastered all over my arms and clothes, my coccyx, hip and elbows throbbing.
Cassandra apparently saw the whole thing happen from the kitchen window and only showed up to help me once her laughter had subsided.
The past two days have been uncomfortable and filled with ibuprofen.
Recently I have been reminded of my need to develop a greater tendency to be grateful, especially when things go wrong.
So let me share a few things I’m grateful for. First I’m grateful that the pain isn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. When the pain shuddered through my body on impact, I was certain it was going to worse than it has been.
I have still been able to run, walk, sit and do most of my daily tasks, albeit with a little pain and decreased speed, but I’m so thankful I can still do those things.
Above all I’m glad it wasn’t my head that impacted the ground. Things would have been a lot worse if it had.
Gratitude hasn’t made the pain in my butt or elbow miraculously heal or disappear, but I’ve definitely felt much happier and hopeful than I have with previous accidents and injuries when I’ve focused on the pain and the problems.
