For many of us, disease, cancer, accidents or old age will claim us. We all have to die. It’s the shared destination of the whole human family.
But for some of us, our lives will be tragically cut short. We will be killed.
FBI data supports the idea that we will know who our killer is before they do the unthinkable.
But who is most likely to kill me, a married man with 5 children living in West Virginia? The answer surprised me as I reviewed data from the CDC.
The person most likely to kill me is the person looking back at me in the mirror.
Per hundred thousand of the US population, suicide occurs at a rate of 14 people compared to homicide at 7.5, that’s almost double!
This doesn’t mean I shouldn’t ever feel concerned about the potential acts of violence by others. I should always do my best to protect and prevent against them.
But am I doing enough to protect myself from the killer within? I currently feel confident that I won’t take my own life, but I also know that I’m only so many steps away from suicide since I possess the capacity to end my life.
There are no easy, one size fits all approaches to safeguarding and promoting good mental health in ourselves and others.
Lifestyle choices, professional help and when necessary, medication can help us recover or remain far from any contemplations or actual attempts to end our lives.
