Shortly after I arrived in America I was attending a Sunday school where I said, perhaps too boldly, that I wanted to own my home and be debt free by the time I was fifty.

Just about everyone in the class laughed at me and Some even said ‘good luck’ with mild sarcasm in their tone. I didn’t think my vision was particularly ludicrous so I didn’t relinquish it.

Well nine years have passed since I sat in that class and now at the age of 32 I’ve very nearly achieved what I said all those years ago.

As a family we’ve worked hard, sacrificed much and have overcome challenges and obstacles. Working through college whilst starting a family was hard, an unexpected ending of a dream career was painful, two years of renovating a home was back breaking.

But this past Spring, after all the ups, downs and bumps, we were able to purchase a home with cash, we paid off all the credit cards we had used to renovate our home in Utah, we purchased a new vehicle with cash after our van broke down en-route to our new home, and paid back all my US student loans.

The only thing we have left is a small English student loan. No car payments. No credit cards. Nothing. And currently we are enjoying a 5-month trip in the United Kingdom.

We have worked hard but our efforts are only half the picture.

I love the line of a Josh Turner song that says; “there ain’t nothing that can’t be done by me and God”

So true! Gods hand has been in our families success. Together we have achieved this! We’ve learned that God really is good and that He sustains, magnifies and guides us as we diligently try. Everything we have achieved over the past nine years has come as a team effort between us and our God.

Now back to those people who laughed at me… I never want to be the kind of disciple that laughs when someone declares a lofty vision for their life, because I have learned that with effort, time and the grace of God, great things can be accomplished!
