As I would sit daydreaming looking out of the window of my elementary school classroom, I could never have guessed the route my life has taken.
It has been my privilege, in large part because of the amazing woman I chose to marry, to travel to so many places and see so much more of the world than I ever thought I would or had plans to.
I have felt the sand between my toes and the ocean on my feet coast to coast in the United States and been many places in-between. I have walked along some of Europes most iconic and historic streets and have seen some of the most spectacular scenery this world has to offer.
But all this traveling has taught me this simple truth, wherever I go, there I am.
My character, my mental and physical health, my relationships, and my faith, whether good or bad, go with me wherever I go. It is impossible to outrun or fly far enough away to escape myself and who I have chosen to become through my consistent actions.
When I have chosen to live a life that has caused depression, anxiety or stress, it goes with me whether I am in Paris, France or Paris, Idaho.
When I have consistently done those things that have created a better relationship with my wife, it hasn’t mattered whether we were in Rome or Rexburg.
When I have paid the price to be healthy and to feel good in my physical body, those feelings have gone with me whether I am in Twin Falls or Idaho Falls. And the same is equally true for when I am out of shape.
The task for me is to develop Christlike character, good mental and physical health, and robust relationships so that it makes literally no difference where I am in the world.
The goal is to be Christlike whether I am living in West Virginia or on an extended trip to England. The goal is to have an amazing marriage with my beautiful wife Cassandra whether we are taking in historic European sites or chilling on the old couch in our front room. The goal is to be mentally and physically well whether I am renovating a home in Utah to sell or remodeling a new home in West Virginia.
All of these things, health, discipleship, relationships, take time and consistent effort to develop. But that development towards growth and becoming better starts where I am right now, not where I was yesterday or where I might be tomorrow.
